While researching a stack of rather interesting and rare records we had laying around, we came across a little vein of some private label stuff from our home state of Wisconsin (you can view these listings here). I wanted to let you in on an unintended learning experience that I had about now the now defunct Cuca Records.
We found a very complete and interesting study of this label and the owner, Jim Kirchstein. I got completely lost in this read, and I encourage you to do the same. You'll get a real feel for the experience of trying to get an independent record label off the ground, and keeping it alive in the face of the fierce competition brought on by the giant mega-labels. Read "The History of Cuca Records" by Sarah Filzen.
Also found was a nice little index of private record labels from Wisconsin. Straight funk. No, just kidding, it's folk. But still useful perhaps.
And since this post has that distinct flavor of Wisconsin (and cheeseheads)...GO PACKERS!
